The Strongest Person Isn’t Who You Think

Not the one who wins fights. The Prophet ﷺ defined strength differently.

In short: “The strong is not the one who overcomes people by his strength, but the strong is the one who controls himself while in anger” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6114).

What the hadith means

Anyone can shout, win an argument or overpower someone weaker. Real strength is holding yourself back at the moment you most want to explode (Bukhari 6114).

What to do when you’re angry

  • Seek refuge in Allah from Shaytan. Two men were arguing in front of the Prophet ﷺ and he said that if the angry one said “I seek refuge in Allah from Satan”, his anger would go (Sahih al-Bukhari 3282). See the dua when angry.
  • Stay quiet until it passes. Words said in anger are hard to take back.
  • Change your position: sit if you are standing, and make wudu (see how to perform wudu).

Holding back anger is part of sabr (patience).
