About AskUmmah

AskUmmah gives clear, simple answers to everyday questions about Muslim life: prayer times, Ramadan and Islamic dates, and the meanings of common Islamic phrases.

AskUmmah is written by the AskUmmah team. We would rather you trust the sources than trust us, so every claim links to where it comes from.

How we check our sources

  • Quran: the Arabic text is from quran.com (Uthmani script). Surah pages use Marmaduke Pickthallโ€™s English translation (1930); short quotes elsewhere are our own plain-English rendering, checked against established translations. Every verse links to quran.com so you can read it in context.
  • Hadith: every hadith links to its page on sunnah.com, with the collection and number (for example, Sahih al-Bukhari 6306). We check the wording there before publishing.
  • Gradings: hadith in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim are accepted as authentic by the scholars of hadith. For other collections we give the grading shown on sunnah.com and say whose it is, such as al-Albani or Darussalam. Where scholars differ, we say so.
  • Weak narrations: we do not use weak (daโ€˜if) or fabricated narrations as evidence. If a well-known saying is weak, we say that clearly and give the authentic alternative.
  • No rulings: we explain texts, meanings, practice and dates. We do not issue religious rulings (fatwas). For a personal question, please ask a qualified scholar you trust.
  • Dates and times: Islamic dates use the Umm al-Qura calendar and are marked as expected until the moon is sighted. Prayer times use established calculation methods, named on each page, and are checked against published timetables.
  • Reviews: every page shows when it was last reviewed.
