How UAE prayer times work
The UAE uses one official method for prayer times, published by the General Authority of Islamic Affairs, Endowments and Zakat (Awqaf). Each emirate’s times differ by a few minutes because the sun rises and sets earlier in the east. Fujairah on the east coast prays first, and Abu Dhabi and the western region pray last.
Times are in UAE time (GMT+4). The UAE does not use daylight saving time.
The five daily prayers: Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha
Every timetable shows six times, but only five are prayers. Sunrise is not a prayer: it marks the end of the time for Fajr.
| Prayer | Starts | Ends | Fard rakʿahs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fajr (dawn) | True dawn, when light spreads across the horizon | Sunrise | 2 |
| Dhuhr (midday) | Just after the sun passes its highest point | When Asr begins | 4 |
| Asr (afternoon) | When a shadow equals the object’s length (plus its midday shadow) | Sunset; do not delay it until the sun turns yellow | 4 |
| Maghrib (sunset) | Sunset | When the red twilight disappears | 3 |
| Isha (night) | When the twilight has gone | Midnight (the middle of the night) | 4 |
These limits come from the Prophet ﷺ in Sahih Muslim 612, narrated by ʿAbdullah ibn ʿAmr. Allah says: “Indeed, prayer has been decreed upon the believers at fixed times” (Quran 4:103). In the UAE, the call to prayer is given at the start time, and the iqamah in mosques follows a few minutes later.
After each prayer, try the after-prayer tasbih (33 · 33 · 33 + 1).
