What is Laylat al-Qadr?
It is the night the Quran was first sent down. Allah says: “Indeed, We sent it down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn” (Quran 97:1–5). A thousand months is more than 83 years.
When is Laylat al-Qadr 2027?
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Search for the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan” (Sahih al-Bukhari 2017). Islamic nights begin at sunset, so each night starts on the evening before the fast with the same number. If Ramadan 2027 begins on Monday 8 February, the odd nights are expected on:
| Night | Begins at Maghrib on |
|---|---|
| 21st | Saturday 27 February 2027 |
| 23rd | Monday 1 March 2027 |
| 25th | Wednesday 3 March 2027 |
| 27th | Friday 5 March 2027 |
| 29th | Sunday 7 March 2027 |
If Ramadan starts a day later where you live, each night moves one day later. Check your city’s Ramadan 2027 timetable.
Many people focus on the 27th night. The companion Ubayy ibn Ka’b swore that it is the 27th (Sahih Muslim 762), while other narrations point to different odd nights. That is why it is best to strive in all of the last ten.
Signs of Laylat al-Qadr
Ubayy ibn Ka’b reported that its sign is that the sun rises the next morning white, without strong rays (Sahih Muslim 762). This is only noticed after the night has passed, so don’t wait for signs: worship in every odd night.
What to do on Laylat al-Qadr
- Pray at night. “Whoever stands in prayer on the Night of Qadr out of faith and hoping for reward, his previous sins will be forgiven” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1901). Even a few rak’ahs count; see how to pray Tahajjud.
- Make lots of dua, especially the one below.
- Read and reflect on the Quran, the book sent down on this night.
- Give charity during the last ten nights.
- Do i’tikaf if you can. The Prophet ﷺ spent the last ten days of Ramadan in i’tikaf in the mosque every year (Sahih al-Bukhari 2026).
Aisha reported that the Prophet ﷺ strove harder in worship during the last ten nights than at any other time (Sahih Muslim 1175).
The dua for Laylat al-Qadr
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي
Allāhumma innaka ʿAfuwwun tuḥibbul-ʿafwa faʿfu ʿannī: “O Allah, You are Most Forgiving and You love to forgive, so forgive me.” The Prophet ﷺ taught this to Aisha when she asked what to say if she knew which night it was. See the full dua and its source →
