What the hadith say, and how strong they are
Shab-e-Barat (also called Laylat al-Bara’ah or Nisf Sha’ban) is the night of the 15th of Sha’ban. Scholars differ about its virtue, so here is what is reported, with the grading shown on sunnah.com:
- “Allah looks down on the night of mid-Sha’ban and forgives all His creation except the idolater and the one harbouring enmity” (Sunan Ibn Majah 1390). Graded da‘if (weak) by Darussalam on sunnah.com. Some scholars, such as al-Albani, considered the meaning hasan because it is reported through several chains. So scholars differ on it.
- “Pray its night and fast its day” (Sunan Ibn Majah 1388). Graded mawdu‘ (fabricated). It should not be relied on.
- ‘Aisha finding the Prophet ﷺ at al-Baqi‘ on this night (Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 739): graded da‘if.
No specific prayer, number of rak’ahs or ritual for this night is established in the authentic Sunnah.
What is established in Sha’ban
- Fasting in Sha’ban: ‘Aisha said she never saw the Prophet ﷺ fast more in any month than in Sha’ban, other than Ramadan (Sahih al-Bukhari 1969).
- The last third of every night: Allah descends to the lowest heaven and asks who is calling on Him, that He may answer (Sahih al-Bukhari 1145). This is every night, all year. See tonight’s last third and how to pray Tahajjud.
