What happened on the Night Journey

Allah says: “Exalted is He who took His servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs” (Quran 17:1).

  • Al-Buraq: the Prophet ﷺ was brought al-Buraq, a white animal larger than a donkey and smaller than a mule, whose stride reached as far as its sight (Sahih Muslim 162).
  • From Makkah to Jerusalem (al-Isra): he was taken to Bayt al-Maqdis and prayed there (Muslim 162).
  • The ascension (al-Mi’raj): he ascended through the heavens with Jibril and met prophets including Adam, Yahya, ‘Isa, Yusuf, Idris, Harun, Musa and Ibrahim (Sahih al-Bukhari 3887).
  • The five daily prayers: fifty prayers were first prescribed, and on Musa’s advice the Prophet ﷺ asked Allah to lighten them until they were five, with the reward of fifty (Bukhari 3887).

The Quran also refers to what he saw at the Lote Tree of the farthest boundary (Quran 53:13–18).

Is there a special prayer or fast for this night?

No special prayer, fast or ritual for the night of Isra & Mi’raj is established in the authentic Sunnah. What the night gave us is the five daily prayers, so the best way to honour it is to guard them. See how to pray salah and the 12 sunnah rak’ahs.
