Jannah comes from the root ج ن ن, which means to cover or hide. A garden is a jannah because its trees cover the ground; the jinn are hidden from sight; an embryo is hidden in the womb.

The count of jannah includes every time the Quran says “garden” or “gardens”, in this life (like the two gardens of Surah Al-Kahf) as well as Paradise.

What these verses teach

Paradise is described as wide as “the heavens and the earth” (3:133), with rivers beneath it and fruit that never ends (13:35). One of the most personal invitations in the Quran is the last line of Surah Al-Fajr: “Enter thou My Garden!” (89:30).
