Ramadan Mubarak vs Ramadan Kareem
| Greeting | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Ramadan Mubarak | Have a blessed Ramadan |
| Ramadan Kareem | Have a generous Ramadan |
Both are common. Some scholars prefer “Ramadan Mubarak”, explaining that the generosity comes from Allah rather than from the month itself, while others see no problem with “Kareem”. Either is understood as a kind wish; we don’t issue a ruling on it.
Why Ramadan is blessed
The Prophet ﷺ said: when Ramadan begins, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained (Sahih al-Bukhari 1899). And whoever fasts it with faith and hoping for reward has their past sins forgiven (Sahih al-Bukhari 38).
