How to read this list
- 69 names appear in the Quran in this form; the verse is linked under each one.
- “Root in” means the Quran describes Allah with the same word root (a verb or related form), not the name itself.
- “Tirmidhi list only” means the name comes from the list in Jami at-Tirmidhi 3507 and is not in the Quran in this form.
Where does the list come from?
The hadith that Allah has 99 names is authentic (Sahih al-Bukhari 7392), but it does not name them. The list most people learn, used here, is in Jami at-Tirmidhi 3507. At-Tirmidhi called that narration gharib, and many scholars say the list itself was added by a narrator rather than said by the Prophet ﷺ. Scholars also explain that Allah has more names than these 99.
Allah says: “And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them” (Quran 7:180).
How to learn them
- Learn five a day. Start with the names you already say in your prayer, like Ar-Rahman, Ar-Rahim, Al-Malik and Al-ʿAzim.
- Call on Allah with the name that fits your need: Ar-Razzaq when asking for provision, Al-Ghafur and At-Tawwab when asking for forgiveness, Al-Hadi when asking for guidance.
- Read Ayat al-Kursi (2:255) and the last verses of Surah al-Hashr (59:22–24): together they contain more than a dozen of these names.

Frequently asked questions
What are the 99 Names of Allah called?

What is the reward for learning the 99 Names of Allah?
The Prophet ﷺ said whoever learns them by heart will enter Paradise (Sahih al-Bukhari 7392). Scholars explain that this means knowing them, understanding them and living by them, not only memorising the words.

No. 69 appear in the Quran in the same form; others come from the same Quranic roots, and a few come only from the list in Jami at-Tirmidhi 3507.
Does Allah have only 99 names?
Scholars explain that the 99 are a special set with a special reward, and that Allah has more names than these.
